The Story of Red

From this new year on I start my column “Style Art Life” in <L’Officiel> Magazine Mandarin version, talking about my style’s inspiration, the art connections and culture histories behind it. Since Chinese new year is coming soon, the first article is “Red”. As one of the most important in Chinese traditional philosophy and cultures, Red contains many multiple meanings, such as Delightful, Graceful, Lively, Holy…Mainly they positive.( However, I didn’t add the politic part in. ) …The earliest record of red clothing was around 3000 years ago, back then people separated various of types and gave them many poetic names.

I love painting with red colours, but the usual thing is most of my portraits in red are not emotional at all. In opposite way, they are actually quite calm. Those cold characters make a big contract with the blocked red space, It shows my perspective of red : There is no actual emotional meaning for any colour, the actual feeling is all comes from your mind.
