Babushka

Recently I have painted few works about Babushka (Matryshka) Doll. It is really fascinating for me that there are so many possibilities of creativity in a series of stable tiny figures, folk traditions are always inspirational. Also,as the term of Russian old-fashioned lady’s wear, Babushka became a style of elegance around world now, then after I finished these paintings, I dressed myself as a Babushka as well – people’s body is a great carrier for the ideas. What’s the next then? Well I just hope to get few Matryshka wooden figure to paint, that is so addicting.

Good evening, Nancy. I have to say that love your work as blogger and especially as a illustrator. I was your reader for a very long time. I’m russian. And have to tell you that words Babushka and Matryoshka – have different meanings. Exactly it’s two different words. Babushka – is how we call our grandmother or just old lady. Another meaning “you look like babushka” it means ‘granny style’, old fashion or not fashionable, because in the past old ladies doesn’t have enogh money and time for fashionable clothes. If they leaved in villages they could wear elements on national clothes like Platok (shawl) on their heads or apron or sundress
Matryoshka – is a wooden doll wich has a secret inside. A smaller doll inside big one. Matryoshka looks like a young girl/lady but not like grandmother. Usually they drawn in national costumes with one long braid
